The Sherman Oaks Galleria opened in 1980 and gave the Valley its accent
The Sherman Oaks Galleria opened October 30, 1980 — three levels, two department-store anchors, a cinema upstairs by December.
Two years later a 14-year-old made it world-famous: Moon Zappa namechecked the Galleria in "Valley Girl," her dad Frank's only U.S. Top 40 hit.
Then Hollywood came shopping. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) filmed its mall scenes here. Valley Girl (1983) followed.
In April 1999 the indoor mall closed for a roughly $200M rebuild — it reopened in 2002 as the open-air offices-and-restaurants Galleria you know at Sepulveda and Ventura.
The mall is gone. The accent never left.
